  1. Just finished the Adnan Syed series. Fascinating and very well laid out. I listened to Serial in 2018, and I don’t think Sarah was trying to tell a story that Adnan was innocent, I think it is important to remember her primary sources are Adnan and Rabia Chaudry. Two clearly biased sources. I watched the HBO doc and whereas I don’t want to imply they were biased, again most of it goes through Rabia and Adnan’s lawyers. After listening to the way you guys lay out the timeline I feel pretty certain that Adnan is guilty. Of course considering your podcast is called the prosecutors I have to consider the possibility that there is bias on your part.
A thought on the cell phone data. Just because incoming calls aren’t reliable, doesn’t necessarily mean the location is wrong, it just might not be right.
I read a transcript of an interview with Jay from 2014 and it seemed his story was again different. It seems like Jay tells a story that minimizes his culpability unless there is someone pressing his feet to the fire.
I liked the analysis that Adnan was likely driving Hae’s car, because based on their history at that location, it seems unlikely that she would have driven him there.
I now feel like Marilyn Mosby was using this to boost her career and maybe help save her career (she is in serious hot water). It supports the narrative that she is progressive on crime, and even if Adnan is guilty he has already served 22 years.

  2. I’m coming to this years after the fact, but I think Brett’s “crime of passion” theory might make sense. My reason for thinking so is a little roundabout…

One thing that has bugged me about this case is Adnan and Jay’s relationship. I think it only makes sense when you consider the common factor: Stephanie. The “crime of passion” theory could work, if Stephanie is inadvertently involved.

In my imagination, I could see Adnan confiding in Stephanie that he wanted to get back together with Hae, and Stephanie maybe trying to help him scheme a way to do that. Maybe Adnan says, “If I could convince her to give me a ride, we could go to Best Buy. But I can’t leave my car at home because I need it later for track/mosque.” And maybe it’s Stephanie who says, “You could leave your car with Jay, and he could bring it to you later.” She might even give them their later excuse: “Ha ha, if you give him your car, maybe he’ll go buy me a birthday present.”

Stephanie wouldn’t have had to know Adnan was going to kill Hae. Adnan wouldn’t have even had to know he was going to kill her. But once it happened and he showed Jay the body, the wheels would have gone into motion.

It would kind of square away why Jay went along with the whole thing, and why said he was protecting Stephanie. Maybe Adnan even threatened to say the whole thing was Stephanie’s idea. ???
