  1. I agree with you guys, I think he is guilty but I wonder whether it is possible that he genuinely believes his own story. He had done a double shift, so had lack of sleep, plus he was taking part in the amphetamine experiment. Maybe the mixture of that plus reading the article about the Manson murders could have led to him having some sort of mental break or hallucinagenic experience.

  2. I’m a new listener & have been binging your podcast since I found it! Sorry to comment on such an old episode, but this particular story stuck in my head, so I did some Googling (and so should you)!

I just couldn’t buy that a Green Beret could be a) subdued by his pajama top and b) knocked out by 2 to 4 drugged out hippies in his own house. He’s not McFly. He’s an exceptionally well-trained lethal weapon for the Special Forces. Google “Green Berets” and learn: GB’s are the deadliest in the military, (didn’t know that), more deadly than a Navy Seal, and specialized in hand-to-hand combat. One team of TWELVE Green Berets can take entire towns. Imagine the number of ways he can kill with his bare hands and probably knows even more escape scenarios. Being subdued like that is not in their DNA. What do you think? Why wouldn’t the prosecution have introduced his fighting/suffering capability?
