I agree with you guys, I think he is guilty but I wonder whether it is possible that he genuinely believes his own story. He had done a double shift, so had lack of sleep, plus he was taking part in the amphetamine experiment. Maybe the mixture of that plus reading the article about the Manson murders could have led to him having some sort of mental break or hallucinagenic experience.
